Ensuring Sustainability

As a consequence of the rapid increase in human activities, the amount of raw materials consumed, waste generated and energy consumed have been rapidly rising in the last few decades. At GSK, plans and strategies have been put in place to ensure sustainability as the company grows. One of the strategies for the company is to be carbon neutral by 2050.

Many GSK innovations work towards ensuring sustainability for both the environment and the company.

[1] Solvent Recovery

These solvent recyclers enable the company to save money and time by reducing your reliance on virgin solvent purchasing and disposal service fees by use of the solvent recovery process. With the recycling of waste solvent, there will be less use of raw materials. Furthermore, air, land and water pollution might be reduced as incidents of careless disposal of hazardous solvent will no longer take place.

[2] 2nd Generation Processes

GSK aims to focus on their research and development to find out more efficient ways of producing the same active ingredients for drug with the same quality or even better. These efficient ways might require the use of less natural resources or less energy, allowing for sustainable development.


[3] Waste Heat Boiler

If we were to discuss about energy changes in terms of chemical reactions, we would notice there are two types of chemical reactions: endothermic (takes in energy) or exothermic (releases energy). In particular, we want to discuss about exothermic reactions which produce heat energy. The heat energy produced during such reactions are often wasted, as they are lost to the surroundings.

To make full use of this property of the reactions, the waste heat boiler uses this energy to sustain heating and boiling which are parts of the pharmaceutical process. Through the use of waste heat, less energy is needed to sustain these heating and boiling process.
