Design of GSK Production Building


The design of GSK production building seems to have several resemblance to that of a cell. We can see how cell compartmentalization is applied and considered in the design of this unique GSK building.

In a cell, each organelles has a different function. The rough endoplasmic reticulum synthesizes proteins while the Golgi apparatus is responsible for chemically modifying and re-packaging products into vesicles for exocytosis. All these organelles work together to create an efficient, specialized cell. This is the basis for cell compartmentalization. Division of labour between all the organelles allows for more efficient and effective work to be done.

We have also seen how cell compartmentalization is applied in GSK. The whole production building in GSK worked together seamlessly to create the active ingredients for pharmaceutical products. The production line starts from the highest floor.

After the first section of the manufacturing process is completed at the highest floor, the products will be transported to the floor below it by gravity. Afterwhich, the next floor will continue with the next section of the manufacturing process. This process will carry on until the base floor where the end product will be produced. The whole building - from top to bottom - is literally the production line. In this production line, the operators have to always be alert as the machines may overheat at times and the operators would have to fix the problems on-site.
